I have learned that when a staff gets sufficiently beaten-down it loses all semblance of motivation. There is no "us vs them" to add fight (dysfunctional but still some level of motivation). There is no shared vision. There is no hoped-for future. As a friend put it yesterday, when the best you can say is, "Well at least I have a job." What is that saying?

And what could I, as a manager but not the chief staff officer, do to combat this? Where does my vision come from? Can I have a vision separate from my organizational leadership without causing further discord?
